Biography

Family background

Herbert Buttree was born on the 20th October 1918, the son of Arthur and Emily Buttree. In the 1921 census, Arthur was described as a farm labourer working on RC Gibson's farm in Collingham and living with his family in Main Street, Collingham. By the time of the 1939 National Registration Arthur, Emily, Herbert and another child, Mary (born in 1924) were all living at 8, Brookside, Collingham. By then Arthur was working as a private gardener, Mary was a nursemaid and Herbert was described as a skilled workman working for the Post Office Engineers Department as a telecommunications specialist.

Service record

Herbert Buttree's name appears on the Service List of the 1945 electoral roll for Collingham, registered at 8, Brookside, Collingham, indicating that he was serving in the armed forces in 1945. However we have not yet been able to identify his exact service.

After the war

After the war, Herbert returned to his parents' house in Brookside and lived there for a number of years, being included on the Electoral Roll for Collingham at that address from 1946 to 1950. In 1951, Herbert married Maud Hemingway. We have not traced where Herbert and Maud lived after their marriage but there is some suggestion from the records that they lived in Scholes at some time. Herbert Buttree died on the 6th January 2002.
