Biography

Herbert Fullerton's name appears on the 1945 Supplementary List of the Electoral Roll for Linton, listed at College House, Linton. This suggests that Herbert served and had some association with Linton.

Family background

Herbert Fullerton was born on the 29th May 1917 in Sculcoates near Hull. He was the son of William A Fullerton, a marine engineer and his wife, Ethel Sarah Anne Fullerton (nee Dale). In 1921, the family were resident at 41 Peane Street, Hull and was composed of William Andrew Fullerton and Ethel Sarah Ann Fullerton, their five children, Grace, William, Edward Alex, Edna Gertrude, Herbert (listed as Herbert Ambrose Ernest Fullerton, and a boarder, Abraham Dale (probably a relation of Herbert's mother.) Herbert was aged 4 years.

Herbert's father, William, died in the winter of 1936-37 and his death was registered in the Sculcoates area, but by the 1939 National Registration, Herbert's mother was living and registered at 106 Albert Avenue, Kingston upon Hull. With her at the address was Herbert who was described as a house and general electrician.

Service record

A family history record on the internet suggests that Herbert joined the army in November 1939 and was initially trained in Whitby, before service for 2 years in Belfast. The article suggests that Herbert then went to Algiers, Tunis and Italy in around 1943. We have not been able to confirm this yet.

After the war

Herbert appears on the Supplementary Electoral Roll in 1945 registered at College House, Linton, so during the war there was some family move to Linton. In 1946, this move is confirmed as we find both Herbert, and his mother, Ethel, registered at College House, Northgate Lane, Linton. A further local move must have taken place after 1946, as we find Herbert and Ethel next registered at 2 Wharfedale Terrace, Collingham in 1948. On the 5th April 1947, Herbert married Elsie Potter in Collingham Church.

In both 1950 and 1952, Herbert and Elsie were living at 73 Brookside, Collingham. After that the family moved to Boston Spa, being on the electoral roll there from 1953 to 1961 at 33 Grove Crescent.

The family history article on the internet suggests that in 1950, Herbert started work for John Smith's brewery in Tadcaster where he remained until he retired in 1982. Herbert Fullerton died in Tadcaster on the 25th January 1995, and was buried in Tadcaster.
