Harradine, John William
(1898-1973)

John William Harradine's name appears on the Linton Roll of Honour for the First World War. John was born on the 23rd August 1898 in Linton, the second child of Herbert Harradine and his wife Martha Harriet Harradine. Herbert was a farm labourer who had been born in Baldock in Hertfordshire, while Martha had been born in Collingham. The 1911 census shows that, at that time, the family were living in Linton and consisted of Herbert, Martha, and their children Shirley, John William, Lewis, Ruth, Mary Elizabeth, and Herbert Edward together with Herbert's brother, Alfred. Sadly the census also states that Herbert and Martha had had 12 children, of whom only the six named here had survived to 1911.

Only one man named John William Harradine was awarded medals for the Great War. That man was Private G/40712 John William Harradine who had served in the 21st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, the 10th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and finally the Royal Munster Fusiliers. This man was discharged on demobilisation on the 31st March 1920. However, we have no way of being sure that this John William Harradine was the man from Linton. 'Our' man could have served, but not abroad, and so would not appear on the medal rolls. Alternatively, 'our' John William Harradine could be the one man listed as simply John Harradine, who was a Driver in the Royal Field Artillery with service number 98199. Finally, there is the possibility that 'our' John William Harradine served in the Royal Air Force or Royal Navy. We can only hope that some new record turns up that will allow us to identify better 'our' man.

We do know, however, that after the war, John William Harradine returned to the area and on the 16th February 1929 married Tamar English at St. James' Church in Wetherby. John continued living in the area; he appears on the electoral roll for Linton from 1921 to 1961 but at the time of the 1939 Registration Act, was living at 31 Brookside, Collingham. John William Harradine died in 1973.
