John Tomlinson was born on the 25th October 1883 in Micklethwaite, the son of John and Mary Tomlinson. John (Jnr) married Evelyn Marshall on the 28th May 1910 at St George's Church, Barnsley and the couple had a son, Wilfred, born in 1911.
In 1911, at the time of the census, John and Evelyn were living in St. James' Street, Wetherby.
In 1918, John's name appears on the electoral roll for Micklethwaite; by 1919 his name appears, but this time marked as absent due to Naval or Military service. It appears likely that John joined the Army towards the end of the war. We have been unable to match the man from Micklethwaite with any of the 118 men named John Tomlinson who were awarded medals during the Great War, and given an enlistment towards the end of the war, it is also possible that John did not serve overseas and was not awarded any medals. We have therefore been unable to precisely identify John's service in the war.
John continued living in the area, in 1939 he was still living in Micklethwaite, at 4 Leeds Road.
