Biography

Family background

Elsie Mary Richardson was born in Wetherby in 1895, the daughter of John H and Amy Richardson. In 1911, she was living with her parents and 1 brothers and 4 sisters at 2 Ashfield Place, Eccleshall. Elsie's father was a coachman, but her brother, Sylvester, was a wool spinner and she and her sister, Emily were doffers of worsted.

Worsted is a fabric made from a high-quality type of wool yarn and doffers removed bobbins, pirns or spindles holding spun fiber such as cotton or wool from a spinning frame and replaced them with empty ones.

Service record

Elsie must have moved to Collingham, because in 1917 she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment giving her address as Thornfield, Collingham.

She worked in the VAD as a clerk in the Quartermaster's Office at the East Leeds War Hospital on Harehills Road in Leeds from the 19th July 1917 to the 29th December 1918.

After the war

We have not traced Elsie Mary Richardson after World War 1.
