Service Number 10520
Battalion 2nd Battalion
Regiment West Riding Regiment
Fred Inman was born on the 16th June 1894, the son of Herbert and Ada Inman in Hopetown, Yorks
In 1901, Fred was living with his parents at Copmanthorpe Grange Cottage and his father was a horseman on a farm. Unfortunately, we have not been able to trace Fred Inman on the 1911 census.
Fred Inman's service record has survived and shows that he enlisted in the Army in Halifax on the 6th February 1913. After some basic training, Fred was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the West Riding Regiment and later, on the 26th October 1913, to the 3rd Battalion of the same regiment.
At the start of the Great War, Fred was therefore a regular soldier and was immediately posted overseas on the 13th August 1914. He served in France from that date until the 26th October 1914 when he returned to the UK and served at home until the 26th January 1915.
On the 27th January 1915, Fred was posted back to the 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment in France and served with them through to the 5th May 1915. On that day, Fred was captured at Fromelles and became a prisoner of war, initially at Dulmen and then at Rennbahn. Fred saw out the war as a POW. After the end of hostilities, on the 17th December 1918, Fred was repatriated to the UK and posted back to the Depot. On the 27th July 1919 he was re-posted to 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment.
We have no definite traces of Fred Inman after the war. We have found a burial of a Fred Inman aged 34 at St Mark's Church, Low Moor near North Bierley, Bradford on the 19th February 1927. This particular man had lived at 7 Church Street.
