Biography

Family background

John William Noble's name appears in the 1918 and 1919 electoral rolls for Collingham, but in 1918 he is shown as being absent due to Naval or Military service.

John William Noble is shown on the 1911 census for Collingham, living with his parents, Frederick James Noble and his wife Ellen Elizabeth Noble, at Main Street, Collingham, along with two other children, Edith Mary and Alice May. Frederick James and Ellen ran the village grocery and sweet shop on the Main Street. The census also shows that in total Frederick and Ellen had had five children, only four of which had survived to 1911. Frederick had been born in East Keswick and Ellen in Collingham. Edith and John had been born in Halton, Yorkshire, while Alice had been born in Collingham. John William Noble had been born in 1897.

Service record

John William Noble's service record has not survived, and for a long time we could not definitely establish his service in World War 1.

However, with the release of the Pension Record Cards and Ledgers, we have found his service was with the 9th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers. He had enlisted on the 11th December 1915. On the 1st April 1918, John was discharged from the Army having been wounded with a wound to the right chest. He was 21. On discharge he was awarded Silver War Badge number 373745.

After the war

John William Noble returned to Collingham after the war and his name is listed in the electoral rolls for Collingham from 1919 to 1928. John William Noble married Edith Annie Richardson at St Pauls Middlesbrough, in 1919 and they lived at Hilltop. John and Edith had three children, Mildred Noble was born at Hilltop on the 18th April 1921 (she died in 2018 aged 97). Her sister, Elsie Joy was born in 1923 (died 2020 aged 97) and her brother, Derrick Noble who died young.

We believe that John died in the Wetherby area in the third quarter of 1928, but his wife Edith remained living at Hilltop until she was elderly and then moved down to a flat in the village.

We are grateful to Jillian Cooper, John William Noble's grand daughter for some of the family details.
