Family background

Robert Kay, born in Linton on the 1st July 1893, was the second son of three sons and one daughter, of John Hill Kay and Mary Jane Kay (nee Hawkes). Robert was baptised in Wetherby on the 3rd September 1893.

In 1911, he was living with his parents and siblings in Linton and seven years later, in 1918, he is listed on the Linton electoral role as an Absent Voter due to Naval or Military Service. However we have been unable to identify exactly what this service was - there are 85 men named Robert Kay who were awarded campaign medals for service in WW1 and we cannot connect any of these directly with Linton at the moment.

After the war

After the war, Robert returned to Yorkshire and on the 17th December 1919, he married Eleanor Jane Thirlwall in Wetherby. Robert and Eleanor had at least two children, Robert Hill Kay (b. 1920) and Margaret Kay (b. 1924). In 1939, as part of the National Registration Enrollment, they were living at The Bungalow in Spofforth and Robert gave his trade as a threshing machine proprietor.

Unfortunately, Robert and Eleanor's son, Robert Hill Kay died in Harrogate General Hospital on the 5th September 1946 aged just 26 years old. He was buried in the cemetery of All Saint's Church, Spofforth.

Robert's wife, Eleanor, died in 1970 and Robert himself died on the 28th January 1974. Both are now buried with their son in Spofforth.
