Biography

Family background

Tom Hinde Skinner was born on the 8th November 1891, the son of Tom and Margaret Skinner of Crown Brewery, Walmgate, York. Tom Hinde Skinner was baptised on the 2nd December 1891 at St. Margaret Church, Walmgate, York. Tom (senior) was a carter at the brewery.

Service record

Tom Hinde Skinner enlisted on the 11th December 1915 as Private 25311 Tom Skinner of the East Yorkshire Regiment. Tom's service record was one of those destroyed by enemy bombing in the Second World War, so we can only reconstruct his movements and postings from other records. His medal roll details show that he served first with the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, but we do not have the dates of that service. Later he was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC) as Rifleman 43504 Tom Hinde Skinner. The medal roll also indicates that at some time, Tom was posted to the 16th Battalion London Regiment.

Tom was wounded during the war, and the Weekly Casualty List of the 8th October 1918 records that "Skinner 43504 T.H. (Walmgate) London Regiment" had been wounded. These wounds were serious enough to cause his discharge on medical grounds from the army and as well as the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, he was awarded a Silver War Badge number B/194440. His discharge was on the 22nd December 1919.

After the Great War

Just before his discharge from the army, on the 3rd September 1919, Tom Skinner married Lily Smith at St. Mary, York. Next year a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Skinner was born and she was baptised at Escrick on the 20th June 1920. Another child, a son, Leslie W Skinner was born on the 9th November 1926.

Tom, Lily and their family lived from about that time at Bilton in Ainsty and they appear on the electoral roll for Bilton from 1921 to 1938. At that time they moved from Bilton to Collingham and they lived at Brookside, Collingham in 1938 and 1939. At the time of the National Registration in 1939, Tom and family were recorded at 3, Brookside, Collingham. Tom was a gravel digger at a gravel quarry.

Tom Hinde Skinner died on the 16th September 1966.
