Biography

Family background

Garfield Charles Andrews was born in Cornwall on the 26th June 1921, the son of Richard Henry Andrews and his wife, Hilda Julie Andrews (nee Strathen). Richard's occupation was a driver. In 1938, when Garfield was 17, his father Richard died. Garfield and his mother, Hilda, remained living in Cornwall, and in 1939, during the National Registration, were near Penzance. At that time Garfield was listed as a farm labourer.

At some stage around the war years, Garfield Andrews moved to Collingham. In 1942, he married Iris Peggy Phillips in the Wetherby district, and on the 1945, 1946, 1947 and 1948 Service Electoral Rolls for Collingham, his name appears. The address he used at that time was 41, Brookside, Collingham, the address of his wife's family in Collingham. We do not know what brought him to Yorkshire.

Service record

We knew nothing of Garfield Andrews service until we found two entries in the baptism records for St Oswald's Church, Collingham. He had two children baptised in the church. These children had been born on the 12th November 1924, and on the 16th December 1943. In both cases Garfield Andrew's occupation was given as a Private in the Pioneer Corps. Without further details, we have not yet been able to identify his unit or where he served.

After the war

Garfield's name continued to appear on the Collingham Service Electoral Roll for 1947 and 1948, so he clearly remained in the Services for a number of years after the war. In each case his address was given as 41, Brookside. However, from 1949 onwards his name appears on the main electoral roll, so he must have left the army, and his address changed, so it is likely that the family moved from 41, Brookside a few doors away to 66 Brookside. We find Garfied Charles Andrews registered at that address through to 1962. After that we loose track of him, until a record of his death in 1995.
