On the 1st September 1939 German troops invaded Poland and two days later, on the 3rd September 1939, Britain declared war with Germany. Thus, 20 years 9 months and 23 days after the Armistice in 1918, Britain was again at war. In those 20 years another generation had grown up in Collingham and Linton and it was their unpleasant task now to go back to war. About two years later, on 8th December 1941, Britain also declared war on Japan, following the Japanese attacks at Pearl Harbour and following the Japanese attacks on British Malaya, Singapore and Hong Kong on the previous day. World War Two was thus a global war and British troops fought across the globe. The villages of Collingham and Linton again played their parts with men and women serving in the armed services and on the home front. This web site tries to record some of their services. However finding details of these services can be difficult and the list below is an on-going project to find and document the services rendered by men and women of Collingham and Linton. We apologise if we have missed out any villager, and will add new stories as and when we find them.
