Biography

Family background

A baptism record for the 14th January 1943 for St. Oswald's Church in Collingham details that the baby's parents were Raymond and Elsie Golton of Brookside, Collingham and that Raymond was an aircraftsman and therefore likely to be serving in the RAF.

Raymond himself had been born on the 17th June 1912 in Ryther, Yorkshire, to Quarton Houlden Golton and his wife, Reccibina Golton, of Sycamore Farm, Ryther. Raymond was one of at least five children.

By 1932, when he would have been aged 20, Raymond was living at East Rigton, Bardsey. In 1935, on the 21st December, Raymond married Elsie Harness in Collingham Church. Raymond gave his occupation as a farm worker. The following year, Raymond and Elsie appear on the electoral roll living at 5 Brookside, Collingham. The family clearly moved around the area, as in 1937 they are living at The Crescent, Sicklinghall, but in 1938 at 6 Railway Cottages, Collingham. It is at 6 Railway Cottages that Raymond and Elsie appear in the 1939 National Registration. Another move must have taken place between 1939 and 1943 when the baptism record mentioned above show them back living in Brookside.

Service record

We have not yet found any details of Raymond's RAF service.

After the war

By 1945, Raymond appears on the civilian list of the Collingham electoral roll, living at 27 Brookside with Elsie. The family made 27 Brookside their home for many years, and we find Raymond and Elsie on the electoral rolls at that address through into the 1960s.

Raymond Golton died in 1993.
