Biography

Family background

Harold Sparling was born on the 28th August 1923, the son of William Sparling, a permanent way labourer for the LNER railway, and his wife Mary Emma Thirlwall.

At the time of the National Registration in 1939, Harold was living with his parents and brothers (including Norman Sparling, see also on this web site) at 32 Brookside, Collingham, where Harold was described as a gardener's boy.

Service record

A World War 2 Army Medal Card shows that Harold Sparling served in the Royal Pioneer Corps in the war as a private with the service number 14331815. We have not yet been able to trace where he served, or for ho long.

After the war

After the war, Harold continued living with his family at 32 Brookside in the early 1950s. We think that Harold Sparling died in 2010.
