Biography
Lilian Joan Nichol's name appears on the 1945 and 1946 Service Section of the Electoral Roll for Collingham, indicating that she had served in the forces during World War 2.
Lilian Joan Nichols was born on the 16th December 1923 in the Wakefield area, the eldest child of Wilfred Allan Ivor Nichols (1899-1971) and his wife, Evelyn Arundel (1899-1985).
Lilian's grandfather had been a farmer near Ledstone, and after his First World War service, her father moved to Compton, Collingham to farm, being on the electoral roll from about 1928 at Compton Grove Farm.
We do not know when Lilian started her war service, but she would have passed the age of 20 on the 16th December 1943, and as an unmarried single woman would have liable for service under the second Military Services Act from that date. We believe that she served in the Women's Auxiliary Airforce (WAAF) with a service number of 2057057. We have, at the moment [Jan 2024] no further details of her service.
After the war, Lilian married Stanley Hall Watson on the 3rd April 1948 in St.Oswald's Church Collingham and in the 1950s they lived in Tadcaster. Lilian died on the 6th June 2006.
